Hatha, Somatics

My Yoga journey began over 25 years ago when I first discovered the healing and grounding nature of a Hatha Yoga practice and how it instantly brought me in contact with myself.Yoga practice demands attention to detail and encourages breathing patterns synchronised with movement. The effect after each practice session was that I felt enlivened and energised and at the same time there was a deep sense of relaxation and serenity. I felt rejuvenated and the more regularly I practiced, the more I touched a feeling of stillness and peace. Because this practice resonated so deeply with me, it was clear that my work would involve sharing with others the many benefits of Yoga as a healing modality.

I have been teaching for 16 years having received two in-depth Yoga Teaching Certifications accredited by the British Wheel of Yoga and Yoga Alliance(UK and US). Over the last several years I have trained and complimented my teaching with Somatic Movement, a floor-based series of sequences which have a nurturing and healing quality. Somatic Movement enriched the teachings I was already offering and I train in this field on a yearly basis as my own practice and my teaching style continues to evolve.

I have an ongoing passion for learning about health and wellbeing and am currently delving deeper into the principles of Ayurveda, exploring the elements that create balance and harmony in daily life.

Hatha Yoga and Somatic Movement

Yoga is the Art of moving the body, mind and breath in a way that it transforms and heals us from the imbalances and stresses of daily life.

The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root ‘Yuj’ which means ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. My teaching focuses on Hatha Yoga, the classical Asanas(postures) of a Yoga practice and within this is woven Breathe-Awareness and Meditation. Hatha Yoga includes dynamic weight-bearing sequences with emphasis on fluidity and precision. These sequences strengthen bone and muscle and bring feelings of joy, lightness and space to the body.

Somatic Movement provides the yin style restorative quality which complements dynamic Yoga. It helps heighten the body-mind connection by developing sensory awareness & wakefulness and aims to restore natural and efficient movement patterns. This is called neuromuscular re-education and it can be invaluable for those with injuries and postural problems. Sequences are floor based and non-weight bearing and serve to mobilise joints and provide myo-fascial release. Somatic Movement works directly with the energy of the subtle body and re-aligns the two sides of the body.  As a result of this, it is especially beneficial to those suffering from fatigue, stress, anxiety, and chronic back, neck and shoulder pain. Somatic Movement prepares the body for the more Dynamic Yoga postures, opens the breath and enhances the effect of Hatha Yoga.

This combination of Dynamic & Restorative Yoga and Somatic Movement helps to reset the body and support deep rest and healing. An intelligently sequenced yoga practice restores our bodies back to a place of balance and this physical well-being has a strengthening and calming impact on the mind.
